Love is where to find it
AGNES Taborada was based in the United States when she came to Cebu on a holiday in 1998. In one of the parties she attended, she met Gregg Huettel, an American furniture designer working for a furniture exporting company based in Cebu. Little did she know he would be her future husband.
After the end of her holiday, she went back to the United States where Gregg soon had a chance to see her again. He went to the United States for a furniture show in 1999, and he got acquainted with her family. She also met his family.
Costanilla: Calungsod and unpaid judges
MOVIE. We are behind the plan of Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia and Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos to jointly produce a movie on the life of Blessed Pedro Calungsod, who will soon be beatified in Rome. Sounds exciting to us considering that, as historians tell us, the martyred youth was from Ginatilan, making him the very first true-blue Cebuano saint.

Singlestalk: Too sick or toxic
Luab: Blessed is the person who is loved
JUNE is the month for brides, but February is the month of love. There really are three stages of love. The first is when love hits you with full force when you are in the ages of 16 to 21. (It seems, though, that the present generation starts younger than 16). This is when caution is thrown to the winds, when people elope, when that piercing surging, burst of fresh innocent “hit” from cupid’s arrow causes us to forget time constraints, parental authority and even societal acceptance. But oh! the wonder and the joy of having felt that gift of being told that you are his only love.
Rediscovering bamboocraft
“UNDER the bam, Under the boo, Under the bamboo tree,” so goes the simple ditty sang by Allie Fox of Paul Theroux’s unforgettable The Mosquito Coast.
Apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes to Bernadette
ONE of the most renowned apparitions of our Blessed Mother happened in Lourdes, France. On February 11, 1858, the Blessed Mother appeared to a girl named Bernadette Soubrious. Her family was one of the poorest in town and Bernadette was sickly girl, uneducated but had a pure heart.
Kiddie Chef
LAST January 28, 2012, I met up with Sun.Star Bacolod Account Executive Mary Grace Buot at the Pearl Manor Banquet Hall to observe a pizza-making contest where Chef Carmine Pece was invited to be the chief judge.
The participants were guests at the joint birthday celebration of Dian Liandro and Dianne Alexa who turned twelve and ten years old respectively.
The kids donned paper toques and white aprons before entering the banquet hall. Inside, a colorful sight greeted all the guests as each table had colorful balloons that sprung out from red toque-shaped containers.
Things people do for love
VALENTINE’S Day is fast approaching – and the male halves of couples are scrambling to find something romantic to do for their female counterparts. It would be wise to avoid the cliché romantic dinner on Valentine’s Day – all the restaurants are taking the opportunity to literally cash in on the holiday and offer meals that will blow a metaphorical hole in your wallet with a metaphorical cannonball.
Pamper yourself
THE place is new. It started operations last January 23, 2012. Situated at the 2nd floor of the new Bacolod Chinese Chamber of Commerce at the back of a bank and the old bus terminal, Pamper Zone Spa and Salon for Kids and Adults is something to visit, to try, and to frequent.
Why? First, the people. My visit to Pamper Zone is very heart-warming. Ivan and Mia Jaranilla–Flores, the young entrepreneur-owners of Pamper Zone, are comely and genial. The couple is hands-on mangers of the spa and the salon, reporting early and daily to manage their business.
Havaianas goes green!
NOTHING beats a soothing and relaxing party. One that offers a sense of renewal and harmony. So was Havaiana's Obrigado 2012 get-together party on January 30 that took a go-green, environment-friendly theme.
Roles
FOR those who care, I celebrated my 53th birthday last February 8. I had a quiet birthday as in the case in most of my birthdays. I had lunch with Chona and two of my Titas to a buffet. I asked Raphael if he wanted to join but he said he was busy. I also invited a cousin but she said she had a prior appointment. The lunch was a pleasant one as it is usually with those Titas of mine. There was laughter and bantering amidst good food.

Tymad: A taste of romance
MANY consider French to be the language of love. Some say it is the nasal vowels that sound very alluring. Others find its pronunciation romantic as it requires one to pucker his lips—which would in a sense be like kissing—while still others think it is the intonation that is very pleasing.
It is no wonder someone would suggest that we “speak French on Valentine’s Day” to impress loved ones. How about, say, eat something French on Valentine’s Day to please the appetite?
Sira-sira store: Eating roses
MY FRIEND Illustracio has been trying to quit smoking. He has tried everything in the book and has failed.
“I can’t stop,” he wailed.
Year of the Dragon roars at Waterfront
DABAWENYOS join millions of ethnic Chinese, Koreans and Vietnamese across Asia in ringing in the new Year of the Dragon with fireworks, feasting and family reunions.
The Egyptian affair
FIRST, the frock. “I’ve used several lace fabrics before, but this time, the patterns are Egyptian instead of the usual floral,” explains Albert Arriba on the second floor of his atelier that has now become the home to his slinky—some puffy, like cotton candies—floor-sweeping dresses.
The ground floor is either occupied with society ladies and gentlemen availing themselves of salon services or with bursting laughter from close friends visiting on hot afternoons (the advantage of situating the atelier on Gen. Maxilom Ave., Cebu City).
Serna: Cebuano-made movies take part in film fest
“BRAVE, bold and original.” These adjectives describe the 12 movies, some of which had already captured the fancy of local and foreign movie watchers and critics, that will be shown in the six-day Cinema One Originals Festival in Cebu City starting tomorrow, Feb. 11, till the 16th.
Four of the 12 movies are Cebuano-made (Di Ingon Nato, My Paranormal Romance, Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria, and Confessional) with one (Imburnal) from Mindanao, making it a total of five movies using the Visayan (or Cebuano) language.
