Monday, January 17, 2011 - 11:35 p.m.

FOOD for most ordinary Kapampangans is very confusing. Ask Kapampangans what they like to eat; you would have a cacophony of answers that would trigger diarrhea. ALMOST a year ago, just as everyone had happily greeted the New Year, the world was shocked by a great tragedy.

On Jan. 12, 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake reduced the already impoverished Carribean nation of Haiti into an almost complete pile of rubble, claimed more than 200,000 lives and shattered thousands of other people’s dreams. It was indeed dispiriting news that greeted the whole world in 2010.

Costanilla: Ricky Davao should have won ‘best supporting actor’ award

Sunday, January 16, 2011 - 11:53 p.m.

THIS is not to offend the country’s Comedy King Dolphy, his legions of loyal fans as well as the awards-giving body that decided to give him the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Rosario, one of the entries to this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival. After watching the movie, I was confused (and still am) why Dolphy got the award when all he did in it was simply provide the narration and act as storyteller.

Acting-wise, he practically did nothing significant that would merit, to my humble understanding and standard, the award that was handed to him by the festival jurors.

Your feast day is at hand and pilgrims are here: to pay You homage, to say hello to you not just anywhere, which can actually be done, but here, here in this city, You know You can call Your own, which is Your own.

What is it that draws us To You, Child-King whom we claim As our own, sometimes divesting You of Your Kingship, dressing You the way we want You to look—like us: As fisherman, or firefighter, a soldier or a basketball player or even as a vagabond?

If we look back, wasn’t it only yesterday that it was Christmas, New Year’s Day, Sinulog, and son? Time does fly.

Gazo: Balaring Blooming

Saturday, January 15, 2011 - 01:41 a.m.

Who would have thought that only a 15-minute walk along a 700-meter bamboo footbridge can transport one into a surreal world? The long bamboo bridge itself weaving among the mangrove trees is an architectural wonder that culminates at a 3-storey lookout by the sea. The journey to there is never boring. The trees are lush and their limbs speckled with lichen - a sure sign that the air is pure. A gentle reminder hangs on a branch saying: Be Friendly to Trees. The birds break out into song often, one knows that they are happy here.

Indeed, having a dream helps us define our goals and objectives and gives our life direction and meaning.

The humble hamburger
