Angel ‘granddaughter’ of a Marawi sultan

ACTRESS Angel Locsin revealed that she spent three days in Mindanao while “Only You” co-stars Sam Milby and Diether Ocampo were away for the Star Magic concert tour in the US.

Although worried about her safety, Angel, together with sister and three other friends, went to the beleaguered town of Munai in Lanao del Norte to get a firsthand look into the condition of civilians there suffering from the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

“I have been planning for that trip for about a month. That was our first time to go there, and we went there without backup or security,” Angel said.

"I don’t know what will happen to me there, but I was there. I saw their condition… they have no lands because lands were turned into camps and no shelters because houses were bombed," she added.

Witnessing how hostility affects innocent civilians, Angel appealed for the resumption of peace talks in Mindanao. She also encouraged people not to be afraid of the province and keep sending help for civilians who were caught in the crossfire.

The actress is reportedly a granddaughter of one of the sultans in Mindanao.

Her mother was adopted by a Muslim royal family in Marawi City. She disclosed that this was also one of the reasons why she visited Mindanao.

“I want to know my roots, but I don’t want to say anything about it now. I am happy to see and meet the people who took care of my mother before,” she said.

She refused to elaborate further about her royal lineage, citing cultural differences.

Angel also turned down queries on what help she extended to the people of Mindanao during her trip. But she vowed to her influence and fame to campaign for end of conflict in the southern Philippines.

With all her humanitarian acts, Angel denied plans of entering politics and desire to have an ambassadorial post. “I am not ready for such big responsibility. I believe that I would be able to help more people when I am not favoring any parties. For me, what is important is the people.” (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
