Arroyo set to resume work

AMID persistent questions on her health, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will resume her activities full blast this coming week, Malacañang officials said Saturday.

A private hospital, however, where Arroyo spent her self-quarantine this week was reminded of the privacy of doctor-patient relations.

"I think by Monday perhaps we can see that the President can be on full work," Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said on government-run dzRB radio.

He also said Mrs. Arroyo is "in very good spirits" and is working on her State of the Nation Address (Sona), which she will deliver on July 27.

For her part, Deputy presidential spokeswoman Lorelei Fajardo said the President has provincial sorties this coming week, including one in Leyte initially scheduled this Thursday.

Fajardo also downplayed questions by Arroyo's critics on her health, saying the procedures she underwent did not indicate anything serious.

United Opposition president and Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay had called on Malacañang to be transparent about the Chief Executive's health as this could affect her judgment.

"What was disclosed during her stay at Asian Hospital is nothing serious enough to affect her judgment and physical body," Fajardo stressed.

But she lectured the Asian Hospital over a "leak" of the medical procedures Arroyo underwent while there as it fueled speculations on her health.

"I hope this becomes a lesson not only to the Asian Hospital but also to other hospitals. Besides, they should have practiced this without being told," Fajardo said.

On Friday, a newspaper report said that Arroyo had breast augmentation procedure at the hospital where she underwent self-quarantine.

It quoted an informant as saying Arroyo was scheduled to undergo augmentation mammoplasty at the Asian Hospital. A hospital source has said a cyst or lump in the groin area was scheduled to be removed by surgery and that a biopsy was done on her breast.

Arroyo checked in at the Asian Hospital on Wednesday and checked out Thursday for voluntary quarantine as a precaution against influenza A (H1N1) virus following her foreign trip to Japan, Brazil, and Hong Kong. (JMR/Sunnex)
