GT-METRO Foundation (GTMF), together with Metrobank Foundation, was awarded as one of the Civilian Organization of the Year for its contributions in the Civil Military Operations of the Philippine Navy-Naval Reserve Command (Navrescom) on September 7, during the closing ceremonies of the 34th Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) National Reservist Week Celebration.
The Foundation partnered with the Navrescom for its Salamin para sa Maliwanag na Bukas Program, a nationwide eye screening and eyeglass distribution activity for indigent elderly and public school children.
"It is through providing eyeglasses to indigent adults especially senior citizens and public school children that the Foundation feels it can make an impact in many communities. With these two tracks, the Foundation can make sure that senior citizens continue to be productive citizens at the same time, addressing vision problems at an early age can help public school children be more efficient in their studies," said GTMF Executive Director Aniceto M. Sobrepeña.
Since 2010, GTMF has distributed over 10,000 reading eyeglasses to adults and elderly, as well as over 500 prescription eyeglasses to public school students in various disadvantaged communities nationwide.
This year, GTMF hopes to continue reaching out to more communities in partnership with Navrescom, not just to provide eyeglasses but also to bring hope for a brighter future. (PR)
