Revenue bureau bares top taxpayers

MANILA -- Celebrities and businessmen remained the top taxpayers in the country, a list posted online by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) showed.

In the 2009 list produced by the revenue generating agency, popular television host Willie Revillame slipped to third spot from second place a year ago after remitting P57.25 million.

Sharon Cuneta-Pangilinan was in 18th place with P19.55 million followed by Kris Aquino-Yap (P12.79 million, 39th); Piolo Pascual (P11.51 million, 50th); Marian Rivera (P10.12 million, 62nd); Judy Ann Santos (P8.21 million, 97th) ; Batangas Governor Vilma Santos-Recto (P5.61 million, 196th); and Claudine Barretto-Santiago (P4.17 million, 369th place).

ABS-CBN’s former top news chief Maria Ressa placed 173rd with P5.91 million while news and radio anchor Julius Babao wound up 175th place with P5.88 million.

Eight-time world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, on the other hand, was ousted in the top spot after paying only P7.41 million in 2009. He was at 113th place this time.

Taking the Sarangani congressman’s position was Elaine Gardiola, who paid a total of P59.54 million in income taxes in 2009. She is the current treasurer of the A. E. Gardiola Construction, Inc.

Next to Gardiola was Rosabelle Bandong, who paid P57.87 million, followed by Revillame, Francis Carlo Taparan (P38.75 million), and Ronaldo Soliman (P36.7 million).

Ramon Ang, president of conglomerate giant San Miguel Corporation, placed sixth (26.44 million) while Oscar Lopez, former chairman of First Philippine Holdings Corporation (P25.70 million) and Henry Sy, Sr., president of SM Investments Corporation (P25.18 million), finished seventh, and eighth, respectively.
