ACTRESS Heart Evangelista is asking for prayers for the speedy recovery of Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago who is suffering from lung cancer.
In a "StarTalk" interview over the weekend, the actress revealed that she had a chance to talk with Santiago a few days back and the latter "sounds okay."
Evangelista said the senator remains positive but the she could not help but worry for her close friend's condition as lawmaker is like a mother to her.
"Nag-usap kami two-three days ago. Doon niya sinabi sa akin na may sakit siya. But the way she said it, she was very strong, na sa ngayon hindi ako nagwo-worry. Kasi kung ngayon, dapat super iyak na ako kasi parang nanay ko siya," she said.
"The way she said it, it seems like she's okay. The cancer is concentrated in only one area. Meron siyang iniinom na gamot and said in a few days she's going to be okay kaya nothing to worry daw," she added.
The TV host-actress said the senator touched and inspired so many lives during her entire career in the public service.
"We should pray for her. She has serve as an inspiration to a lot of people, strength to a lot of people. She means a lot to us and with her strength, and with God, she will be okay. We love you Tita Miriam," Evangelista said.
Santiago, a non-smoker, revealed her diagnosis last week during a press conference at the Senate.
Santiago said her cancer is Stage 4 but the disease is not spreading.
"I have cancer of the left lung, which makes it hard for me to breathe. I am still the same old me. Happy as usual and I am not afraid of cancer."
The 68-year-old senator is hopeful that she will go on remission in six weeks time, but if the cancer will not ease up, she will have further tests and treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.
"God never asks us for an opinion. God just goes ahead and does whatever is in His hands. I just say okay. But I know that God is with me and this test can only help me to grow prettier every day," Santiago said.
Meanwhile, Evangelista has returned in Manila after her two-week vacation overseas with boyfriend, Senator Francis Escudero.
The two visited Paris, France and also traveled to Italy.
Evangelista was tight-lipped when asked if Escudero had finally asked her hand in marriage and only revealed that they did talk about settling down and their future together.
She said she already has a wedding gown and bought her wedding shoes.
The actress said that when the time comes that Escudero will go down in one knee, it will just be a formality and she will definitely answer, "of course".
"When it's about marriage, it is something very serious and there's a very sensitive side with my parents. It's something that we're very careful. We do plan our lives together. It's something we want to plan carefully. And we have to consider other people," she ended. (Sunnex)
