CEBUANA singer Morissette Amon is keen to build a name for herself in the entertainment industry and slowly veer away from the shadow of mentor, Pop Princess Sarah Geronimo.

Since she joined talent reality competition "The Voice of the Philippines" and Geronimo took her under her wing, the 18-year-old was constantly criticized as her idol's copycat. Many noticed that they not only look alike, but also sing the same.

Amon explained that she understands the feedback of the audience because Geronimo has been a big influence in her musical career.

"Hindi ko maiiwasan or matanggal yung pagka 'Sarah' ko kasi influence ko naman talaga siya, idol ko siya. Yun lang, I have to look something different from her and to stand out para makagawa ako ng sarili kong identity and hindi lang second Sarah, to be known naman as Morisette," she said.

She said she is honored to be compared to the Pop Princess, but Amon said her challenge now is to create her own niche in the business.

"Honored ako kasi nag-iisang Sarah Geronimo ako na compare. I just need to find my way to separate myself from her," she said.

When asked if they ever talked about these comparisons, the singer said Geronimo mentioned it to her a couple of times and she is happy that they are both nonchalant about it.

Instead, Geronimo would constantly remind her to work on her talent, keep her feet firmly planted on the ground and never forget to lift everything to the Lord.

"Always keep the faith sa Panginoon. Sobrang religious ni coach and pati nung family niya. Pag nagha-hang kami with her, sasabihin niya na wag namin kalimutan mag-pray," she said.

"When it comes to interpreting, yung emotions mo kailangan totoo. It should be from the inside and hindi para kumanta ka lang. Kung hindi ka man maka-relate, you look for something else para mas maging true yung delivery mo. That's something na I will keep throughout the journey," she added.

Although Amon failed to bring home the grand prize, the showbiz newbie said she is happy with how things are going in her new career.

She said she is slowly recognized by the masses and more opportunities are coming her way.

"Hindi maiwasan na may maiba talaga sa buhay ko. Kasi dati pag maglalakad ako sa mall, parang wala lang. Ngayon meron ng nakakapansin. Marami akong na-experience na maganda naman and maraming opportunities na dumarating," she said.

Amon also fears that there are a lot of good singers in the industry, but she tries to look at the positive side of things. She said competition pushes her to do more and give more.

"Sabi nga diba would you rather be a big fish in a small pond, or a small fish in a big ocean. Of course merong takot but ganun talaga. Dapat dumaan ka sa maraming proseso para maabot mo yung mga pangarap mo," she said.

Morissette is part of the "Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs 2014". She interpreted Francis Louis Salazar's entry "Akin Ka Na Lang". (Sunnex)
