JURO x Action: Celebrating the Power of Filipino Youth-A A +A
Tuesday, September 24, 2013
SHARING is caring, more so when it comes to talent and skill. JURO Salon Exclusif, one of the country’s leading experts in hair styling, endeavors to elevate the country’s impoverished youth segment along with local Japanese-lead NGO, ACTION. Founded by Yokota Hajime, the organization gathers prominent specialists from Japan and the Philippines to educate children in the art of cut and color.
This first-time collaboration between two countries, called “Power of Scissors,” recently launched its pilot sessions with a class of 16 students from different local institutes. To date these boys and girls, some as young as 12, have received top-notch education in various styling techniques. All the materials used in-class come straight from benefactors in Japan, as does the funding for the worthwhile venture.
Jude and Rose Hipolito of JURO are proud to be counted as part of the exclusive roster of mentors for the project. More than knowing the inner workings of everything hair-related, the couple has that extra something: passion, a key ingredient in their day-to-day operations. Known for their precision cuts and customized color, they devote time to speaking with clients, gathering hair history to provide the best procedures. It was, in fact, this drive for excellence that got the couple interested in ACTION’s plan to create stylists a cut above the rest.
“Vidal Sassoon actually came from an orphanage,” says Rose Hipolito, Technical Director and Color Specialist of JURO. “If that level of talent can be cultivated in these kids that would be fantastic. What Hajime is doing is very progressive and Jude and I believe a lot in his vision.”
As head of ACTION, Hajime approached the tandem because of their unerring eye for detail and approach to in-store training.
“Visiting their salon, I noticed that Jude and Rose are very dedicated,” he says. “They’re very efficient when it comes to customers and their service is at par with internationally acclaimed salons.”
Given the caliber of educators behind ACTION, it seems as if there is no shortage of aptitude to go around. Ultimately the goal of the program is to create future hair stylists with world class skills. In fact, Jude and Rose someday hope to be able to take a few of their protégées on as part of JURO’s elite team. With this, the two specialists plan to be part of a select group in the industry, one that specializes in empowerment, with hope for the future. (PR)
