TO AID its Filipino crew members and their families who were affected by the recent earthquake that struck Bohol and Cebu, AIDA Cruises, the leading German cruise line, in cooperation with Magsaysay Maritime Corporation (MMC), conducted a charity event last December 5, 2013 at the latter’s office in Cebu City. The event gathered AIDA crew members and families and was attended by Ms. Imke Mecke, AIDA’s Senior Manager for Recruitment Fleet and Ms. Abigail Berenguer, MMC’s AIDA Fleet Director.
During the event, Ms. Mecke expressed her heartfelt sympathy to those affected by the earthquake. She also mentioned that a day before the occasion, the AIDA and Magsaysay teams were able to visit some of the seafarers' families who were affected by the earthquake, and their reception was overwhelming and heart-warming. She handed over individual checks to the affected AIDA families summing up to a total donation of US$10,000. And with the recent devastation of Yolanda (Haiyan), the super typhoon that battered the Visayas region last November, Ms. Mecke also assured the attendees of AIDA’s commitment to support the survivors.
Simultaneously, AIDA conducted its annual two-day Career Caravan to provide rewarding career opportunities to qualified candidates from the Visayas region who will work onboard their 10 vessels. During the caravan, Ms. Mecke also announced the arrival of two new AIDA vessels in 2015 and 2016, which will be manned by Filipino crew members. Since 2009, AIDA has been conducting its Career Caravan in the said region because according to Ms. Mecke, "the hospitality and excellent qualification of the Visayans are highly appreciated by the German guests onboard."
