In the men’s side, three-peat champion FEU turned back host school University of Santo Tomas (UST), 2.5-1.5, to catch the latter in the leadership boards.

FEU and UST both tallied a total 20 points. But FEU took the top spot at the end of the 1st round after the tiebreak points.

In the Juniors’ division, it was a neck-to-neck battle between two-time defending champion Baby Falcons and Baby Tamaraws who both finished with a total of 18.5 points.

FEU took the No. 1 spot after edging Adamson University in tiebreak points. FEU disposed of Ateneo de Manila University, 2.5-1.5, while Adamson downed UST, 4-0, to share lead at the end of the 1st round.

Neck-to-neck in men’s volleyball

In men’s volleyball, rivals Ateneo and La Salle kept their Final Four bids alive after blasting separate foes last Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan.

The Green Archers relied anew on veteran Chris Macasaet to avenge its first round loss to the University of the Philippines 25-23, 25-19, 25-23, to post their seventh win against five losses.

Macasaet tallied 14 points, 12 hits and 2 blocks while John de la Vega and Michael Antonio combined for 24 points to lift the Taft-based squad.

Lloyd Belgado and Giancarlo Ramos teamed up for 23 points to banner the losing cause of the Fighting Maroons. The game also saw skipper Jan Paolo Martinez held to a measly four-point output.

Ateneo meanwhile blanked University of the East 31-29, 25-22, 25-18, to join Fighting Maroons at fourth place with identical 6-6 win-loss cards.

Seasoned volleyball players Andre Joseph Pareja and Narciso Intal Jr. posted identical 16 points to repeat over the Red Warriors.

Intal also scored 14 hits and 2 blocks while Pareja had 12 hits, two blocks and two ace services but team captain Eduardo Ortega contributed only a point throughout the 68-minute action.

The duo of Benchard Pedrano and Alvin Vigil produced 21 points, where Pedrano added 11 hits and one ace service to lead the Red Warriors for a 4-8 slate.

With the loss, the Red Warriors joined National University Bulldogs and Adamson Falcons are now facing elimination jitters as they slipped down to 4-8 win-loss mark.

As of this posting, Macasaet leads the pack for best player with 188 hits, 31 kill blocks, and eight ace services. He is closely followed by Danilo Ramosa of National University and Andre Joseph Pareja of Ateneo.

UAAP volleyball action on Sunday will feature the Lady Archers as they try to nail its 12th straight victory at the expense of resurgent University of Santo Tomas (UST) in the 4 p.m. main event.

NU stuns Adamson batters

National University (NU) arrested a two-game losing skid by stunning reigning champion Adamson, 4-3, in the 72nd UAAP baseball tournament Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

The win enabled the rookie-laden NU clouters to remain in a tie for third with La Salle at 4-3. The Falcons, though, remained in second spot in the standings behind University of the Philippines (5-1).

In softball competitions, UST crushed La Salle, 12-2, to extend its winning run to seven. They need to win three more games to complete a sweep of the title.
