House probes PBA player’s case

A BRAWL involving Burger King (BK) player Wynne Arboleda has reached the House of Representatives as it begins an inquiry on the incident Wednesday.

Manila Representative Amado Bagatsing, chairman of the House committee on games and amusements, will head the investigation.

Arboleda attacked Smart-Gilas fan Alain Katigbak last October 16 in a Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) match after the BK guard apparently heard insulting remarks from Katigbak.

After receiving a lot of negative comments from PBA fans for his action, Arboleda issued a public apology for Katigbak, saying: “I take full responsibility and express regret over the unfortunate incident that involved me and a PBA fan during the Burger King - Smart Gilas game.”

Arboleda also said that fans should display proper behavior and respect the players when watching PBA games.

The PBA has already handed down a decision on Arboleda's case that led in his suspension for the rest of the 2009-2010 season.

The veteran player will lose P2.73 million income for his suspension.

In the decision letter sent to Arboleda, PBA commissioner Renauld Barrios said: “As we pointed out to you, even granting that said fan was foul-mouthed and verbally abusive as confirmed by reports to us, there is a “line” that a PBA player cannot and should not cross: to physically harm a fan."

But Katigbak would not settle for Arboleda's suspension and insisted that the cager should be banned for life.

Jose Angelo Agcaoili, Katigbak's lawyer, has filed a complaint addressed to Barrios recommending the lifetime ban of Arboleda.

Businessman Katigbak also included Arboleda's teammate Mark Yee in his complaint for allegedly hitting him with his knees.

The committee of Representative Bagatsing has invited Arboleda, Katigbak, Barrios, PBA chairman Angelito Alvarez and the head of the technical committee to explain the incident. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)

This is a very unfortunate

This is a very unfortunate incident. Only losers and no winners. You guys should think next time and fans should learn to shut up and just enjoy the game. Learn not to get carried away. It is only a game of basketball not a game of life or death. Win or lose, you get paid as professionals. Fans are fans because they are not gifted with an athlete's talents, so shut up. Fans are only good at clapping their hands. Get it.
