PASSENGERS of public utility jeepneys (PUJs) and tricycles plying the streets of Makati will get a one-peso fare discount on July 12 as a birthday gift of various transport groups to Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay.
Makati Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Hermenegildo San Miguel said the fare discounts offered by members of the Unified Transport Federation of Makati (UTFM) and the Ang Bagong Makati Tricycle Federation (AB-Matrifed) would run from 8 a.m. to 12 noon Tuesday.
San Miguel said the two transport groups agreed to grant the discount to show their appreciation of the mayor's support to them and their families.
According to UTFM president Nerio Duka and AB-Matrifed president Alberto Galisim, the fare discount is their way of thanking the mayor for his support to the transport sector through various programs implemented by the City Government that promote the welfare of public utility drivers and operators and their families.
The UTFM and AB-Matrifed are alliances of local transport groups formed by jeepneys and tricycle drivers and operators from the first and second districts of Makati City.
For his part, the younger Binay thanked the officers and members of the two transport groups for making his 34th birthday celebration more meaningful with their gesture.
"I am touched by this generous gesture from the city's local transport sector. I am sure the riding public will also be delighted," Binay said. (AH/Sunnex)
