MANILA (Updated 11:02 a.m.) -- Miss Angola Leila Lopes was crowned Miss Universe 2011 Tuesday (Philippine time) at the Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo, Brazil while Philippines' pride Shamcey Supsup finished as third runner-up.
The pageant named Ukraine's Olesya Stefanko as first runner-up, Brazil's Priscila Machado (second runner-up), and Luo Zilin of China (fourth runner-up).
Other awards were also handed to Miss Montenegro for Ms. Congeniality and Miss Sweden for Miss Photogenic.
Supsup, a native from the General Santos City, competed with more than 80 stunning ladies and received overwhelming support not just from the Philippines but also from the Filipino community around the world.
During the question-and-answer portion, judge Vivica A. Fox asked Supsup, "Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person you love? Why or why not?"
Supsup answered: "If I would have to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person that I love. Because the first person that I love is God, who created me. I have my faith and my principles, and this is what makes me who I am. If the person loves me, he'll love my God too."
The Filipina beauty was also an early favorite in the competition. She was called as the 15th candidate included in the Top 16, seventh in the Top 10 and second on the final five contestants.
Supsup received the second highest fan votes for the swimsuit and evening gown competitions. She was also voted as the number one fan favorite online.
Supsup graduated magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines-Diliman campus with a degree in Architecture and topped the board examination last year.
Contestants from 89 nations on six continents spent the past three weeks in Sao Paulo, trying to learn samba dance steps, visiting impoverished children and kicking a football around for cameras as the globe's biggest beauty contest is held in Brazil for the first time.
The pageant was hosted by NBC "Today" anchor Natalie Morales and the Bravo network's Andy Cohen. Judges were celebrities including Connie Chung, supermodel Isabeli Fontana, Indy race car driver Helio Castroneves, Vivica Fox, Adrienne Maloof, Amelia Vega and Philippine international singer Lea Salonga.
