UNA to finalize senatorial line-up next week-A A +A
Friday, September 21, 2012
THE senatorial line-up of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) will be finalized by Monday, September 24, just a week before the official filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs), a member said.
Navotas Representative Tobias Tiangco said the party of former President Joseph Estrada and Vice President Jejomar Binay, so far, has nine candidates in its line-up.
Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia, the 10th candidate of UNA, dropped from the slate on Thursday to run for a House of Representatives seat representing Cebu's third district.
"We will discuss the line-up in an executive committee meeting on Monday," said Tiangco, the party's spokesperson.
Sure to run under UNA's ticket are Representatives JV Ejercito (San Juan City), Jack Enrile (Cagayan), and Mitos Magsaysay (Zambales); reelectionist senators Gringo Honasan and Loren Legarda; former senators Miguel Zubiri, Richard Gordon, and Ernesto Maceda; and Joey de Venecia.
Tiangco said UNA is reserving two slots for Senator Francis Escudero and Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) chairperson Grace Poe-Llamanzares.
"We're waiting for Chiz (Escudero) and Grace if they will join," he said.
The Liberal Party (LP) of President Benigno Aquino III earlier asked Llamanzares and Escudero to join its 2013 senatorial slate.
Ejercito, meanwhile, hopes that the "big three" of UNA will bring more votes for the coalition.
"The administration has government machinery and the Presidential endorsement. But we have former President Erap, Senator (Juan Ponce) Enrile and Vice President Binay. They are our big three and we are hoping that they can offset, or even get us slightly ahead (of LP)," Ejercito said.
