Tuesday, December 18, 2012
PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III on Tuesday formally installed Police Deputy Director General Alan Purisima as acting chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
President Aquino led the Change of Command ceremonies held at the multi-purpose hall of Camp Crame, Quezon City.
Purisima replaced Police Director General Nicanor Bartolome who opted to retire early on Tuesday after serving as PNP head for more than one year.
In his speech, President Aquino lauded Bartolome for his honest and dependable service which has strengthened the police force. He also commended the retired official in upholding peace and security in the country.
The Chief Executive thanked Bartolome for his decision to retire early in order to give Purisima ample time to prepare for next year's elections.
Aquino, meanwhile, expressed his utmost trust and confidences to Purisima, saying that the newly-installed PNP chief would always side with what is right and good and bring honor and prestige to the police force.
He told Purisima that the first test of his leadership is to ensure the conduct of peaceful and clean elections.
Purisima has been designated as head of Task Force Elections 2013.
Purisima served as intelligence officer of the Presidential Security Group during the presidency of Aquino's late mother, Corazon Aquino.
He was born on November 21, 1959 and grew up in San Ildefonso, Ilocos Sur. He is married to Mrs. Maria Ramona Lydia Isidoro Purisima, with whom he has four sons.
He was part of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) "Dimalupig Class" of 1981. He earned a Masters of Public Administration degree from Manuel L. Quezon University in 1995.
Purisima has received several awards and commendations as a member of PNP including Cavalier Award for Police Operations in 2003, Award of the Presidential Unit Citation Badge, Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation Medal, Anti-Dissident Campaign Medal and Medalyang Pagtulong sa Nasalanta.
On February 2012, he was bestowed the Cavalier Award for Command and Administration—a rare accomplishment, as few PMA Alumni are conferred awards for both in the field of Police Operation and in Command and Administration.
He was also awarded the Bayaning Likas (BaKas) Parangal on September 12, 2012, for his initiatives in assisting the victims of the southwest monsoon that caused major havoc in Metro Manila on August 2012. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
