AT LEAST one person was reported dead while hundreds were evacuated in South Cotabato due to an encounter between government militiamen and members of an alleged Moro rebel breakaway group, the state disaster agency said Thursday.
On 5:45 a.m. of January 12, members of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (Cafgu) were conducting their foot patrol operation in the interior part of Barangay Ned, Lake Sebu, when they were then fired upon by the suspected members of a Moro rebel breakaway group lead by an unknown commander, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.
The agency said the encounter prompted 96 families or 379 persons from Sitios Kumilat, Kisayan, and Blakul to leave their places and evacuate to Barangay Ned Proper.
One unidentified Cafgu member was reported dead in the encounter, the NDRRMC said.
The provincial DRRMC coordinated with the Office of Civil Defense in Soccsksargen regarding the incident, the agency added. (Emmanuel Louis Bacani/Sunnex)
