MANILA (2nd Update) -- Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile declared Monday the position of the Senate President vacant but senators voted to reject his motion.
Eleven senators voted to keep Enrile in his post while three went against and two abstained.
Before the voting, Enrile delivered privilege speech against those who accused him of bribing colleagues to keep his post as Senate President.
"I claim no vested right to this position (Senate President)," said Enrile. "Let's settle this matter once and for all. Time is of the essence. We have to perform our duties as lawmakers," he said.
Majority Leader Sotto earlier objected to the motion of Enrile to declare his post vacant. (Sunnex)
