Honasan will not attend, Estrada will attend PDAF hearing-A A +A
Wednesday, August 28, 2013
SENATOR Gregorio Honasan announced Wednesday he will not attend the Senate probe on the pork barrel scam on Thursday.
In a press release, Honasan said he "fully supports" the investigation but "the Senate should focus more on the real issue rather than to put on the spot the different personalities who are involved in the controversy."
"But like any other Filipino, I also want to find out the truth in this controversy," he said.
The Blue Ribbon committee led by Senator Teofisto "TG" Guingona III will conduct its investigation on the fund scam Thursday.
The senator wants a "calibrated abolition" of the controversial fund, asking the administration to "eliminate other discretionary funds not only those given to the legislators but also the funds that were received by other branches of the government as well as different departments and agencies."
Intelligence funds, which are not being reviewed by Commission on Audit, should also be looked at, he said
"Our people wants accountability from the government. It is about time that every kind of funds coming from the government should be scrutinized," Honasan said.
In line with this, the senator called both Upper and Lower House leadership to prioritize the passage of freedom of information (FOI) bill.
Honasan sponsored the People's Ownership of Government Information measure in the 15th Congress and approved on third reading at the Senate. The counterpart measure at House of Representatives only reached the sponsorship stage in the plenary.
"If only the FOI Bill had been passed, we could have avoided the agony of serializing and having a trial by publicity over the media about the issue. There should be an immediate passage of the bill to operationalize transparency in public affairs and to put an end to this kind of controversy," he said.
On the other hand, in an ambush interview, Senator Jinggoy Estrada said he will attend Thursday's hearing and "will answer questions in the proper forum, if ever I will be implicated."
"At the the proper forum, I will answer all the question," he said. (CPT/Sunnex)
