The ceremonies will continue with the opening of the COED@40 Time Line Exhibit, mainly posters mounted on the stairwell of the Rizal Library, and some memorabilia from women graduates of note.
A fun program, talk show style, hosted by some well known Ateneo alumnae will also be held at the library's 5th floor. The event culminates with a buffet.
Coeducation in Ateneo de Manila, a Catholic university founded by Jesuits in 1859 passed a rocky road.
Inspired by the well-known Chinese adage “Women hold up half the sky,” the celebration speaks of the active participation of the women of Ateneo in building a peaceful and progressive society.
It welcomed female students in 1973 after a long and winding debate.
In 1973, the very first batch of female students enrolled in the Ateneo de Manila’s College of Arts and Sciences. In 1976, only two dozen or 24 women were awarded a full Ateneo diploma. By 1977, women made up 28 percent of the graduating class. Today, 4,377 young women are enrolled in the Loyola Schools, making up 51 percent of our college student population.
The headline 40 Years, Half the Sky: Celebrating Coeducation in the Ateneo” is taken from a well-known Chinese adage that “women hold up half the sky,” recognizing the importance of women’s participation in the development of a free and peaceful society.
Ateneo women alumnae have definitely come a long way over the last 40 years and contributed in so many different ways to society. The Ateneo is home to the first woman Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Maria Lourdes Aranal-Sereno, the first visually impaired summa cum laude graduate Roselle Ambubuyog, CEO and President of the Filinvest Group Josephine Gotianun-Yap, President of Malayan Insurance Co. Inc. and MICO Equities Inc. Yvonne S. Yuchengco, Filipino Equestrian and Asian Games Gold Medalist Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworksi, Entertainer-Superstar Kris Cojuangco Aquino, journalist and Music Mogul Lizza Guerrero Nakpil, and Sun.Star Management President Gina Garcia Atienza.
Dr. Antonette Palma-Angeles, vice president for the Ateneo Professional Schools, and Josephine Gotianun-Yap co-chair the organizing committee for the celebration.
