FDA warns vs ‘deceitful’ online products-A A +A

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a stern warning against buying health products online saying these could pose health hazards to consumers.
According to FDA Advisory 2013-036, buying health products online as some are using “deceitful” health and therapeutic claims may be dangerous.
“All consumers are advised to be more vigilant and critical about on-line and digital advertisements so as not to fall prey to the marketing schemes of internet fraudsters,” said the FDA.
The health agency said it issued the warning amid the presence of BIO STEM PLUSTM in the online market as it is currently being sold through Sulit.com.ph.
Among the claims of the product are “Naturally increase adult stem cell circulation, may assist as a helper in up to 70 known human conditions, aids in repair of damage tissues, could decrease the effect of age. and 'mga sakit na high blood, vertigo, back pain, lahat 'yon WALA NA!!! dahil sa BIO STEM PLUS TM your natural Stem Cell Nutrition.'"
But FDA stated, the said product is not registered with them as it cannot meet standards either as a stem cell product or as a food and dietary supplement (FDS).
“The public is hereby warned against buying and using unregistered BIO STEM PLUSTM since it is neither an FDA-approved stem cell preparation nor an approved drug product,” FDA said.
FDA stressed that the product cannot be an approved stem-cell product since it is to be taken orally and will not pass as a product for registration as human cells, tissues and cellular and tissue-based products (HCT/Ps).
“HCT/P's are intended for implantation, transplantation, infusion or transfer into a human recipient. Products containing ingredients that are taken orally, or even applied topically, cannot pass as HCT/Ps,” said the FDA.
Similarly, it also said that the claims of the product to be able to cure certain diseases or medical conditions are not consistent on how FDS work.
“There is no scientific and clinical study that would support or back up its health and therapeutic claims,” said FDA. (HDT/Sunnex)
