Weekend clashes kill 3 soldiers, troops capture 2 alleged NPA-A A +A

AT LEAST three soldiers were killed while two New People's Army (NPA) rebels were captured in separate encounters over the weekend, the military said Monday.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said soldiers captured two NPA rebels in Negros Occidental and recovered 12 high-powered and low-powered firearms, even as two more rebels surrendered.
The Army's 62nd Infantry Division encountered some 17 NPAs at the boundary of Taboso town and Sagay City about 4:45 a.m. last Saturday.
Initially, the soldiers captured two NPAs and recovered three M-16 rifles and two caliber .45 pistols.
Following the encounter was another clash between the government troops and NPAs in Leyte at 5:45 p.m. Saturday.
"We intensified our peace and security operations in order to protect the populace and secure their place from lawless elements. As we continue with our follow-on operations, our soldiers were instructed to strictly follow the rule of law and put the safety of our people as the primary consideration," said Brigadier General Aurelio Baladad, Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division.
So far, the AFP said government troops have recovered nine firearms, seven of them high-powered, and captured two NPA members since Saturday’s encounters.
Meanwhile, two NPAs surrendered to Army troops under the 27th Infantry Battalion based in T’boli, South Cotabato last Saturday.
The AFP identified them as Regie Wata Laugo alias Greg/Ramsis and Wata Laugo alias Ricric. Both are now undergoing custodial debriefing in said army base.
AFP troops recovered one AK47 rifle, 14 kilos of ammonium sulfate, one VHF radio ad subversive documents after an encounter with NPA rebels in Loreto, Agusan del Sur, Saturday.
Meanwhile, in Loreto, Agusan del Sur, a Philippine Army sergeant was killed during an encounter between 26th Infantry Battalion troops and 10 NPAs last Friday.
Also last Friday, an Army corporal and a CAFGU Active Auxiliary were also killed in during an ambush in Davao del Sur.
In Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte, another private first class was wounded after 10 NPAs harassed elements from the 30th Infantry Battalion conducting peace and development activities last Saturday.
In Tanay, Rizal a private first class from the Army was wounded after troops from the 16th Infantry Battalion encountered an undetermined number of NPAs. (JK/Sunnex)
