Bishop on Luisita arrests: A bid to suppress truth-A A +A
Thursday, September 19, 2013
MANILA auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo sees no other reason behind the arrest of Anakpawis Representative Fernando Hicap and other land reform advocates at the Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac but to suppress the truth.
Pabillo pointed at the government as being behind the efforts of the Tarlac police.
“Bakit nila hinahadlangan itong mga ginagawa ng mamamayan na suriin kung tama ang ginagawa ng pamahalaan?” said Pabillo, who is the chairman of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) – National Secretariat for Social Action, Justice, and Peace (NASSA).
To note, Hacienda Luisita is a 4,335-hectare land that is owned by the Aquino-Cojuangco clan of President Benigno Aquino III.
Last Tuesday, Hicap and his company were taken into custody by the Tarlac police and were charged with malicious mischief, illegal assembly, direct assault, and trespassing.
The fact-finding endeavor was organized to probe alleged fraud, harassment and land grabbing activities that attended the distribution of Lot Allocation Certificates (LAC) conducted by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) from July 18 to August 21.
According to Pabillo, such an action is unfortunate considering that the fact-finding team is only after the just implementation of the Supreme Court (SC) order to distribute the lands.
“Nakakalungkot kung bakit nila inaresto ang mga tao na pumupunta roon para sumuri kasi may mga reklamo na ang nakatatangap ay hindi yung talagang dapat na makatangap,” Pabillo told Church-run Radio Veritas. (HDT/Sunnex)
