AT least one inmate was confirmed killed while at least 12 were injured in a riot inside the maximum security area of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City Tuesday night.
NBP superintendent Venancio Tesoro said in a radio interview the incident occurred at 11:30 p.m. in one of the dormitories in the maximum security area.
He said the incident prompted them to suspend visits to inmates in the maximum security area.
Following the riot, the NBP also searched the dormitories for weapons.
Tesoro said an initial investigation showed the riot started when two inmates played a game of "Cara y Cruz" but had a quarrel.
NBP officials are verifying information the weapons used included improvised shotguns and bladed weapons.
In a television interview, Justice Undersecretary Francisco Baraan promised to conduct an investigation into the riot.
“We will look into the facts, tignan natin kung may criminal or administrative responsibility ang ibang mga gwardya o opisyales diyan. 'Di dapat pinapalampas ito,” he said.
Baraan said they don’t have to remind the NBP management to ensure strict security in the prison facility. (JK/Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
