COC filing period ends; campaign period starts-A A +A
Thursday, October 17, 2013
THE last day of the filing of Certificates of Candidacy (COC) for the October 28 barangay polls on Thursday was uneventful, based on the assessment of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Comelec Education and Information Department (EID) head James Jimenez said only a few individuals set out to file their COCs on the final day as many already appeared to have heeded the Comelec's earlier call.
"Based on what we saw, kaunti lang ang nag-file. And there are also some offices na walang pumunta na halos. I guess that's a good thing," said Jimenez in an interview.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes personally closed the doors of the City Election Officer in Manila to mark the end the six-day filing period.
Brillantes said the Comelec will not extend the 5 p.m. deadline for filing of COCs except in areas affected by the earthquake in Central Visayas.
The campaign period will officially Friday, October 18, until October 26.
An earlier report by the commission showed that there were already 57,674 that filed their COCs for barangay chairman while 467,196 that are aspiring to become barangay councilmen in just the first three days beginning October 11 until 14, except October 13.
In each of the 42,028 barangays nationwide, expected to be voted are one barangay chairman and seven barangay councilmen. (HDT/Sunnex)
