142 bunkhouses ready before Christmas-A A +A

MORE than 3,300 displaced families affected by the onslaught of Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) will not be homeless this Christmas as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is fast tracking the construction of 142 bunkhouses in typhoon-ravaged areas.
DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson said the workers rush the completion of 119 bunkhouses, each comprising of 24 units of dwellings that can accommodate a total of 2,856 families on or before December 22.
"Hopefully, more will be completed in time for the New Year," Singson said.
He said the construction of the bunkhouses in 29 different sites is closely being supervised by DPWH regional directors and district engineers and were given special in Eastern Visayas particularly on the emergency works in the devastated areas in the region.
Singson added that upon completion, the agency will turn over the units to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for distribution to beneficiaries.
He said the bunkhouses targeted for completion by December 15 are the following: 16 units at nine sites in Guiuan; 11 units located in Barangays 4, Batang, Carmen, and Padang in Hernani; five units located in Barangays Paya, Biga and Parena, all in Giporlos; one unit in Barangay Busay, Mercedes; four units in Balangkayan; four units in Quinapondan; one unit in Maydolong; two units in Barangay Sabang Suribao, Borongan; two units in Lawaan; three units in Salcedo; and two units in Balangiga.
Sixteen units along Barangay Concepcion in Ormoc City are also expected to be completed by December 15.
Around 22 bunkhouses are being constructed at Motocross Area along Daang Maharlika (Caibaan) and one unit at NHA-Sagkahan Bliss in Tacloban City are scheduled for completion by December 20.
The DPWH chief also noted that site development and construction activities in 29 different areas were delayed after hampered by the heavy rains being experienced in area, but the private contractors tapped by the agency have committed to work double time during good weather to facilitate the completion of the bunkhouses.
