DOJ: Gift checks don't expire-A A +A
Friday, December 13, 2013
GIFT checks normally given out during the holiday season are as good as cash and should not bear any expiry date, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said Friday.
Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said issuers, retailers, and merchants should follow the prohibition against expiration date under the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Administrative Order No. 10-04, which took effect in July 2010.
"In this season of Christmas when our brethren are making their purchases for loved ones and colleagues, this is a simple and concrete way to make sure that spending hard earned money is not met by unsavory and deceptive practices," she said.
Under the order, gift certificates/ checks/ cards shall be redeemable until used up by the bearer.
All purchases of goods and services which are paid for with them are covered by promotional sales activities, loyalty programs, warranties, return policies and discounts. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
