Traditional Christmas truce with NPA to be declared-A A +A
Monday, December 16, 2013
PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III might approve the recommendation to declare a unilateral Christmas ceasefire with the New People's Army (NPA), Malacanang said Monday.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said that the government has been "traditionally" declaring every year a truce to give military and police personnel time to spend time with their families.
"The unilateral Christmas ceasefire that we have, it is traditionally being done every year under this administration," he said.
Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita Deles reportedly proposed to the President to declare a Christmas ceasefire with the NPA.
Lacierda, however, said that he has yet to wait for an advice as to when the traditional truce would be declared.
But while there would be a ceasefire, Lacierda said that the government forces would be on a defensive mode.
He expressed hope that the NPA would reciprocate the ceasefire once it is declared. (SDR/Sunnex)
