A QUEZON City court ordered Bro. Eli Soriano, the leader of religious "Ang Dating Daan," to pay P100,000 to Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) for his libelous remarks against the INC on national television 10 years ago.
In a decision, Quezon City Regional Trial Court branch 92 Judge Eleuterio Bathan said that Soriano should pay P12,000 fine to the court and P100,000 in moral damages to the INC for the attacks he made to the religious group during the live telecast of his program "Ang Dating Daan" in Channel 21 on April 25, 2013.
In said program, Soriano alleged said, "Iglesiang Pumapatay ng kapwa tao, manloloko, terrorist, manunuklaw, tiktik, may armory arsenal gunmen and mamamatay-tao."
Bathan said that there was no question that Soriano's broadcasts were made public and imputed to the INC that caused dishonor, discredit and contempt to the accused's rival religious group.
Emilio Magdaraog, the person responsible for airing "Ang Dating Daan" program told reporters that the statement of Soriano were made in defense to an earlier INC attack on him, which labeled them as "mangongotong, manghuhuthot, mandarambong, hidhid, ganid, and mangungulimbat."
"The attacks of the INC on the Ang Dating Daan head minister which started on June 11, 2001 prompted us to revenge," he said.
However, Bathan said that self-defense is only applicable in crimes against persons, as one of the justifying circumstances under Article 11 of the Revised Penal Code.
Granting that self-defense is applicable in the case, Bathan said that retaliation has no merit.
"They should have filed the necessary criminal and civil case against Soriano’s detractors to protect his interest instead na gumanti sila on National TV," he said reporters.
Soriano's lawyers and supporters however refused to give any further statement. (Sunnex)
