MORE than a million people are expected to flock to the country’s national park to witness the New Year’s Eve countdown and brilliant fireworks display.
National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) Public Affairs chief Kenneth John Montegrande said that prior to the countdown and fireworks, a free concert featuring top bands and celebrities will also be staged in the park to welcome the Year of the Horse.
Montegrande said that the countdown to 2014 and fireworks display are just two of the exciting events that can be witnessed at the country’s premier park.
People gathered at Rizal Park reached around 800,000 last December 24, and more than 1.5 million on Christmas Day itself, said Montegrande.
He noted that the rise of people flocking to the park is an indication that it is again becoming a favorite place for leisure of families and friends during special occasions.
"The park will be considered a one-stop shop for our countrymen and foreign tourists. They will go here not just to walk around but also to shop and have family and barkada bonding. Everybody is welcome here," Montegrande said.
He also noted that to maintain the "zero crime rate" during the previous years’ Christmas and New Year celebrations, the management of the park will deploy enough security personnel and police officers through the Manila Police District-Tourist Police inside and outside the perimeter of the park.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has released special stamps for the upcoming Year of the Horse.
The Year of the Horse stamps, each measuring 40mm X 30mm were designed were done by PHLPost in-house layout artists Jose Antonio Jayme and Jan Michael A. Manuel.
PHLPost said that the P10-stamps features the stylized head of a horse and while the P30-stamps highlight the stylized horse.
PHLPost said it has also printed 7,000 pieces of souvenir sheets priced at P80 each. (Sunnex)
