Address youth unemployment, government urged-A A +A

THE government should ensure that the youth are equipped with jobs when they graduate, Senator Bam Aquino on Thursday said, as he cited data from the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) showing that half of the unemployed belong to the youth sector.
“Youth unemployment is a growing epidemic in the Philippines and all over the world,” Aquino said during a hearing of the Senate committee on youth this week.
According to Dole, 1.42 million out of the 2.8 million jobless Filipinos are from the youth sector.
Aquino said the government's push for inclusive growth will not take off unless the problems of youth unemployment and underemployment are not immediately addressed.
The neophyte senator called on the Dole, the Department of Education (DepEd), and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), as well as the private sector, to develop programs that will create more jobs for the youth.
Aquino also said there is a need to solve the so-called "job mismatch," which contributes to the high unemployment rate.
"We need to ensure that our graduates are equipped to find jobs that fit their skills and educational attainment, after they finish school," the senator said. (Sunnex)
