'Basyang' makes landfall over Siargao

MANILA -- Tropical Storm Basyang (international name: Kajiki) has further accelerated and made landfall over Siargao Island Friday night, the country's weather bureau reported.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Basyang was located at the vicinity of Siargao Island at 6:00 p.m. Friday.

Pagasa placed several areas in the Visayas and Mindanao under storm warning signals due to the storm.

Placed under storm signal number 2 are the provinces of Iloilo, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Siquijor, Guimaras, Cebu, Bohol,
Leyte, Southern Leyte, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran Island, Camiguin, Dinagat, Surigao del Norte, northern part of Surigao del Sur, and northern part of Agusan del Norte.

Signal number 1 was also hoisted in Masbate, Palawan, Calamian Group of Islands, Northern Samar, Aklan, Capiz, Antique, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, the rest of Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, northern part of Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte and Zamboanga del Norte.

Meanwhile, 5,178 passengers were stranded as 97 vessels were not allowed to venture due to rough seas brought about by the storm.

With maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 100 kph, Basyang was forecast to move West at 33 kph, according to Pagasa's weather bulletin.

Residents living in low lying and mountainous areas under public storm warning signal number 2 and 1 are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides. Likewise, those living in coastal areas under signal number 2 are alerted against storm surges.

Estimated rainfall amount that Basyang will bring is from 5 - 15 mm per hour (moderate - heavy) within the 400-kilometer diameter of the tropical storm. (Sunnex)
