Cayetano challenges Binay to show moral toughness-A A +A

SENATE Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano on Wednesday challenged Vice President Jejomar Binay to show moral toughness and issue a definitive statement on the alleged participation of his closest political allies in the pork barrel scams, as he confirmed that he will be running for the presidency.
Cayetano said that it is his desire to serve God and his country.
The Senator said politics should be set aside for the sake of truth and the Filipino people and the Vice President, he said, should seriously consider the welfare of the people whose money has been stolen in connection with pork barrel scandal.
"Pakiusap kay VP, make a very, very strong statement -- Na 'kahit kakampi ko iyan, sagutin ninyo [ang ibinibintang sa inyo].' (An appeal to the Vice President. Make a very, very strong statement. Though they are my allies, answer the charges)," Cayetano said.
The senator denied suggestions from the Binay camp that his proposal for the Supreme Court to designate special criminal courts for high-profile cases and heinous crimes is mere politicking, saying that the Vice President's statements have really caused fears among the whistleblowers and state witnesses in the pork scam.
"He should not use the standard [line] pinupulitika kasi, The Filipino people and the justice system deserve to insulate high-profile cases from politics," he said.
Cayetano, in earlier interviews, said he was glad that some senators tagged in the controversy have already made public statements denying their involvement in the pork barrel scam.
He said Binay's statements, on the other hand, only tends to weaken the case being prepared by the Department of Justice (DOJ) against those involved in the scandal and undermines the entire campaign of the government to stamp out corruption.
Meanwhile, Cayetano also admitted that his plan to run for the presidency is because of his strong advocacy to continue the good governance for this country.
The senator confirmed that his group will be releasing the PTK programs meant to help the poorest of the poor in our country and erase the "5-6 mentality," which will help alleviate their present situation through livelihood projects.
The Senate Majority leaders said a person eyeing for the highest post should really examine his conscience and his intention because the presidency is a sacred vow to God, to country and the Filipino people. (Camille P. Balagtas/Sunnex)
