POLICEMEN should not provide any information about a committed crime particularly to members of the media to avoid speculations and misinformation, official said Wednesday.

In an interview, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director General Alan Purisima, in the launching of Police Operational Procedures manual 2013 edition in Camp Crame, said new rule such as deferring personnel, particularly investigators, from giving information regarding any crime is not permitted unless investigation has ended.

Media outfit should not pertain as the investigators of the crime when giving or writing reports because they were only given the "basic facts."

"May nakitang patay sa ganoong lugar. Ganoon lang ang basic fact," Purisima said.

Information such as if the victim or suspect is walking or riding a motorcycle and the motive of the crime is not allowed to be divulged to anyone to avoid disruption or non-solution of the crime.

"Tao din naman sila, para mapangalagaan 'yung credibilidad nila hindi 'yung napatay na nga tapos kung ano-ano pang opinyon at speculation ang sasabihin kung bakit sila napatay," he said.

Purisima said the manual was revised in such a way that PNP members will easily understand its provisions.

"Sa police operations sinulat na natin 'yung mga procedures na dapat sundin ng bawat pulis kapag sila ay nasa operation. Ito nakalista na step by step para kung tutuusin niyo idiot's guide, ibig sabihin we simplified everything for our policemen to understand 'yung police operational procedures," he said.

According to the PNP chief, the difference of the old manual to the new are the words used and if there is a need to translate it to other local dialects, they are allowed to do so for better a understanding.

Purisima also reiterated that only the police investigators are allowed to enter the crime scene to avoid "evidence pollution" and destroying of investigation's credibility. (Sunnex)
