THE Philippine government on Saturday lauded the election of Abdel Fattah El-Sisi as the new president of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
In a statement, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario said the election of el-Sisi is a strong indication that the road map to democracy in Egypt continues.
"We welcome the peaceful conduct and outcome of the Presidential elections in Egypt as these signify that the country is moving towards peace and stability for the benefit of the Egyptian people and the whole Middle East and North Africa," said del Rosario.
He said the Philippines is already looking forward to continuing its long-standing bilateral cooperation with Egypt.
"The Philippines looks forward to continued close cooperation with Egypt under the leadership of newly-elected President and former Field Marshall Abdel Fattah El-Sisi," said del Rosario.
He said this is because Egypt has been a steadfast friend of the Philippines at the bilateral and multilateral levels.
In addition, del Rosario also noted that Egypt has been supportive of the peace process in Mindanao, including the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro between the Philippine Government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
To recall, del Rosario had visited Egypt just last May 18, where he met Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy and outgoing President Adly Mahmoud Mansour.
In the said meeting, the DFA noted that the Philippines and Egypt both pledged to pursue greater cooperation.
Earlier in the week, el-Sisi was officially declared the winner of the country's presidential election that was held last month after he got almost 96 percent of the votes. (Sunnex)
