SIX government troops were injured in a firefight with communist New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Davao City on Tuesday afternoon, the military said on Wednesday.

Captain Alberto Caber, spokesperson of the military's Eastern Mindanao Command, said undetermined number of rebels were either killed or injured in the clash.

Caber said troops from the Army's 84th Infantry Battalion and police Special Action Force were on a "combat operation" when the fighting broke out with about 30 rebels at Talomo Mountain in the upper portions of barangays Baracatan and Catigan in Toril District in Davao City around 1:40 p.m.

He said the rebels withdrew after a 30-minute firefight, leaving five soldiers and a policeman injured "and undetermined on the NPA side."

"The troops were on security patrol in the area for the protection of the same community," said Caber, adding pursuit operations are ongoing against the retreating rebels.

The wounded personnel were brought to a hospital for treatment, he said.

Caber said the operation was part of the directive of Eastern Mindanao Command chief Lieutenant General Ricardo Rainier Cruz III to all military unit commanders "to be vigilant and continue its joint operations against any threat to peace and security." (VR/Sunnex)
