DETAINED Senator Juan Ponce Enrile had his fourth eye check-up on Sunday following his confinement at the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital in Quezon City for plunder and graft charges in relation to the pork barrel scam.
Escorted by members of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), Enrile left for the Asian Eye Institute in Rockwell in Makati City around 8:30 a.m. for the treatment of his macular degeneration in the left eye.
The check-up didn't last long, as the 90-year-old veteran politician returned to the PNP hospital around 9 a.m.
Enrile's visit to the said eye institute was his fourth since he surrendered to authorities on July 5 after the Sandiganbayan Third Division ordered his arrest in relation to the scam allegedly masterminded by businesswoman Janet Napoles.
The first two check-ups happened on July 5 and 6 for the treatment of his macular degeneration in the right eye. This ailment can cause blindness, especially to aging individuals like Enrile.
A medicine was injected in his left eye on Saturday.
The PNP earlier said the lawmaker has a twice-a-month check-up and treatment of his eyes -- an injection for the first day and a follow-up check-up the next day.
The PNP also said Enrile's camp is the one paying for the eye check-up.
Last Friday, Enrile refused to enter a plea on the plunder charge during his arraignment, prompting the court to enter a not guilty plea on his behalf. (Third Anne Peralta/Sunnex)
