DESPITE the controversy surrounding the conduct of elections in Indonesia, the government of the Philippines, on Wednesday night, welcomed the win of newly elected Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
In a statement, the Philippines, through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), congratulated Widodo for his win over Prabowo Subianto in their July 9 face-off.
"The Philippines congratulates His Excellency Joko Widodo for his victory in the presidential election of Indonesia," said the DFA.
The department noted how Indonesia has been a strong bilateral partner and ally of the Philippines, especially in the Southeast Asian region.
The DFA said that with the elections of Widodo, the Philippine government is looking to continue its commitment to further strengthen its "deep and abiding friendship" with Indonesia.
"The Philippines looks forward to working with President-elect Widodo to further strengthen Philippines-Indonesia relations," said the DFA.
On Tuesday night, Indonesia's electoral commission announced the win of Widodo after garnering 53 percent or over 70 million votes during the July 9 elections.
Subianto, however, announced on Wednesday morning that he would be challenging the result of the elections, saying it was marred by large-scale cheating. (HDT/Sunnex)
