Wednesday, August 6, 2014
THE Bureau of Immigration (BI) said Wednesday that they will turn over the 12 Chinese poachers to a Palawan court after the latter convicted the foreigners of illegal fishing and entry.
"The procedure is to turn over to Palawan court, then they will be put in a regular jail," said lawyer Elaine Tan in a telephone interview.
The turnover of the Chinese nationals will be as soon as possible, she said.
Tan said that the foreigners have been in their custody since the Chinese were arrested in Palawan in April 2013.
"After their arrest, they were turned over to us since there is a deportation case," the BI official added.
On Tuesday, Palawan Regional Trial Court Judge Ambrosio de Luna found the Chinese national guilty of violating the special law for Tubbataha, a World Heritage-listed marine sanctuary in Palawan.
The Chinese will be detained from five to 12 years, the maximum penalty allowed for violating the said law. (FP/Sunnex)
