SENATOR Paolo Benigno "Bam" Aquino IV filed a bill seeking to require the appointment of a registered nurse in all public schools to look after the health and nutritional needs of the Filipino students.

Aquino said Senate Bill 2366 aims to provide "quality education that every Filipino child deserves."

"It is concerned with the whole self–physical, mental, and spiritual," he added.

Aquino said that health-related issues among schoolchildren tend to increase which affects their schooling, hampering their ability to learn and retain lessons and skills.

"Some students might be even be forced to skip school days due to sickness, further impeding their ability to learn," he said.

The role of nurses in public schools is to improve the delivery of public health care and provide relevant and timely education on wellness, hygiene, sanitation, and other health safety measures to public school students, Aquino added.

Moreover, Aquino said the bill would also solve the alarming increase on the rate of unemployed nurses in the country with estimates of P400, 000.

If the bill will be implemented, the Department of Education (DOH) and the Department of Health (DOH) are required to employ at least one registered nurse in a public school.

The nurses who will be employed will receive a salary grade of 15, a mandatory minimum wage for government nurses under Republic Act 9173 or Philippine Nursing Act of 2002. (Sunnex)
