THE Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking for the creation of regional energy plans to boost energy security and sustainability in the country.

Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla said the formulation of regional energy plans is fundamental in the execution of the projects and programs cited by the Philippine Energy Plan (PEP).

"The need for regional energy planning is essential for us to explore potential energy sources and promote regional energy security across the nation," Petilla said.

Petilla said the agency already granted 25.08 megawatts of renewable energy projects, as cited to the Palawan Power Situationer and Outlook presentation.

Moreover, there are also five megawatts pending applications and 1.7 megawatts of potential renewable energy sites.

"The biggest project is the 10 megawatts Puerto Princesa Solar Power Project which was awarded by Enfinity Philippines Renewable Resources Inc.," he said.

Meanwhile, 189.3 megawatts worth of renewable energy projects were already provided by the agency in the Mindoro Island.

The biggest on the projects is the 48 megawatts Puerto Galera Wind Power Project of the Philippine Hybrid Energy Systems Inc.

"There is also 47.1 megawatts of potential renewable energy and 151.2 megawatts of potential biomass energy resources due to Mindoro's extensive agricultural lands," he added.

Petilla said 73.36 billion cubic feet of gas is also estimated to be found on-shore of Mindoro Island on which the operator of the service contract is the Pitkin Petroleum.

The draft of the PEP has now been reviewed by the Energy Planning and Policy Bureau (EPPB) for finalization.

Meanwhile, the series of public consultation and stakeholders meetings are being held for the creation of the drat Mindoro Island energy development plan.

Petilla said the target schedule of release of the final Palawan and Mindoro Energy plans is on the last quarter this year and January next year, respectively. (Sunnex)
