PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte said Wednesday that he might give up Mindanao should the Congress fail to pass a law that will change the unitary type of government to federal system.
“If the country will not be changed into federal system, you might as well give up Mindanao,” Duterte said at the Urban Poor Solidarity Week in Mandaluyong City.
Duterte has called on Congress to immediately pass a measure that will implement a federal type of government.
He also vowed to step down from the office once an effective federal system of government is passed.
The President said that if his administration fails to push for federalism, the Moro people will never cooperate with the government to pursue long-lasting peace in the country.
“[With no] federalism, the Moro people [will] never commit to anything else. I am saying this but if you don’t want to believe me, it’s up to you,” Duterte said. (Sunnex)
