January 25 declared 'Day of National Remembrance' for SAF 44

Sunday, February 26, 2017

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has issued a proclamation declaring January 25 of every year as "Day of National Remembrance" for the 44 police commandos who were killed in Mamasapano, Maguindanao two years ago.

Proclamation No. 164 issued on February 21 is dubbed as "A Day of National Remembrance for the Heroic Sacrifice of the Forty-Four Uniformed Personnel of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force."

"I ask all our countrymen to remember the heroism of the SAF 44 and recall the daily sacrifices of our uniformed personnel for the sake of the continued peace and security of our Nation," said Duterte in the Proclamation.

Duterte said their "heroism" also serves as a constant reminder of the continuing sacrifices being made by the "valiant uniformed men and women in the line of duty."

The Proclamation read that the SAF 44 were killed in the line of duty while serving a warrant of arrest on a known terrorist in Mamasapano, Maguindanao.

Foreign terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan, was killed in the operation. But the 44 SAF members also died when they encountered armed men while withdrawing from the clandestine operation on January 25, 2015. (SDR/SunStar Philippines)
