PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte is set to appoint Armed Forces Chief-of-Staff General Eduardo Año as the next Local Government secretary after his term as military chief ends in October this year.
Duterte announced the selection of Año during a press conference at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport-Terminal 2 in Pasay City on Wednesday, May 10.
Duterte, who was quizzed who will be his next appointees in the Cabinet, called Año and asked him to join him in front of reporters.
The Chief Executive then introduced Año. "You are now facing the next DILG (Department of Interior and Local Government) secretary," he said.
Duterte's announcement ended the speculations that former senator and losing vice presidential candidate Ferdinand Marcos Jr. would be the next DILG head, after the one-year election ban has already been lifted.
Año, a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1983, will serve as AFP chief until October 26 this year.
Duterte said he would wait until Año's term as AFP chief ends before he will formalize his appointment.
Año served as chief of the Army's 10th Infantry Division. He also became the head of AFP's Intelligence Service when top communist leaders Benito and Wilma Tiamzon were arrested in March 2014. (SunStar Philippines)
