MALACAÑANG on Saturday congratulated 28-year-old Cebuana Mary Joy Tabal for winning the first gold medal in the women’s marathon in this year’s Southeast Asian Games held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
“We congratulate Mary Joy Tabal for giving the Philippines its first gold medal with her performance in the Women’s marathon at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said Saturday.
Tabal bagged the first gold medal for the Philippines at the ongoing 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur. She finished the 42.195-kilometer race in two hours, 48 minutes and 11 seconds, while second placer Hoang Thi Thanh of Vietnam was seven minutes behind the Cebuana marathoner.
The Philippines now has four medals – Tabal’s gold medal, one silver medal in Sepak Takraw event, and two bronze medals in archery.
“We now have one gold medal, one silver medal, and two bronze medals. Congratulations to our athletes and good luck to the rest of the Philippine team. The whole nation is solidly behind you. Long live to you all,” Abella said. (SunStar Philippines)
