'Isang' maintains strength; moves closer to Batanes

TROPICAL storm "Isang" maintained its strength as it moved closer to Batanes Group of Islands, the state weather bureau said on Monday evening, August 21.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geological and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its 11 p.m. bulletin that the center of the tropical storm was estimated at 80 kilometers (km) east of Basco, Batanes.

Pagasa said Isang is moving at 80 kilometers per hour (kph) with gustiness of 97kph. The storm is expected to move 475 kilometers west northwest of Calayan, Cagayan, on Tuesday evening, August 22.

Northern Cagayan including Babuyan group of Islands, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte are under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal Number 1 while Batanes group of Islands is under Signal Number 2.

Pagasa said Isang will enhance the Southwest Monsoon which may bring light up to heavy rains over Visayas and the rest of Luzon. (SunStar Philippines)
