PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has expressed full support for the possible inclusion of two Cabinet officials, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. and Special Assistant to the President Christopher "Bong" Go, in the administration's senatorial slate for the 2019 elections.
Communications Secretary Jose Ruperto Martin Andanar said early morning of Wednesday, March 14, that Roque and Go have the support of the President, if they plan to join the 2019 senatorial race.
"Late night in Malacañang beside the President's two senatorial bets from the Cabinet, Bong Go [and] Harry Roque," Andanar said, as he uploaded a photo, showing him posing with his fellow Cabinet officials on his Facebook account.
In his impromptu speeches, Duterte has frequently mentioned Go and Roque's possible senatorial bid next year.
Duterte's ruling party, the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), announced in November 2017 that Roque was among those included in its senatorial slate for the 2019 mid-term elections.
Go, the President's closest aide, was also being considered by the PDP-Laban to be one of the party's senatorial candidates.
The two, however, are still playing coy about their potential bid for Senate seats.
Roque expressed gratitude for Duterte's support, but stressed that he lacks the financial resources to run for senator.
"[I] don't have P500 million. I thank him for the support but I have no money," he said Wednesday.
Go, in a statement on Tuesday, March 13, said that for now, he is focused on serving Duterte "until death."
"[Duterte] is the one giving me strength to continue serving the Philippines," he said. "Wherever fate brings me, I will serve President Duterte until death." (SunStar Philippines)
