Navotas fire death toll now at 12

MANILA (Updated 12:37 a.m.) -- The death toll from a fire that razed a residential area in Navotas City Saturday night has risen to 12.
Some of the fatalities were identified as Dritz Blancaflor, Carlos Blancaflor, William Agarin, James Agarin, Jennifer Agarin, Harvy Agarin, Jerod Salonga, Natalia Salonga, Angela Salonga, Remedios Ortillana, and George Milagrosa.
The fire started past 11 p.m. Saturday at the house of Milagrosa at A. Liongson Street in Barangay San Roque and quickly spread as houses in the area stand close to each other.
More than 100 houses were razed and more than 300 families were displaced by the fire.
The fire also destroyed parts of the nearby San Roque Elementary School.
Authorities said the fire reached the Task Force Alpha and was declared under control at 2:30 a.m. It was totally put out before 5 a.m. Sunday.
The 300 families are now staying at San Roque National High School, a nearby basketball complex, and a nearby chapel.
The City Government has coordinated with the Department of Social Welfare and Development for assistance to the displaced families.
Investigators initially estimated the damage to property at P5 million.
Authorities believe an unattended candle caused the fire.
