Renewable energy use as climate change mitigation strategy

STRONGER hurricanes, severe heat waves, devastating flood, water level rise, to name a few, are some of the confronting global environment issues the countries worldwide are confronting in this era of industrialization and globalization.

The world and human activities are highly dependent on energy sources, which have been dramatically polluting the concentration of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, in air that slowly increase temperature on the planet.

The Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change explained that emission of greenhouse gases from the energy industry is one cause of climate change and global warming that threatens human survival and stability of global economy and giving deleterious effects on the environment.

One solution to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases is the use of renewable or "green" energy sources as mitigation strategy to combat the effects of climate change and mitigate greenhouse gases emission.

Renewable energy is obtained from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, biomass, and so on. Renewable energy is sustainable, which means that it does not put the environment at risk, and can be produced locally and by the consumer as renewable energy is produced with local resources.

According to Biodiesel Life Cycle Analysis, 78 percent carbon dioxide reduction in emissions can be guaranteed compared with petro diesel. Renewable energy sources can provide more jobs or stimulate employment.

Renewable energy is of important significance in achieving the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change target of 2oC climate change policy.

In the RIO Declaration on Environment and Development, use of renewable energy sources was elaborated as one solution to ensure environmental sustainability, which is a goal of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

As many technological innovations have been discovered and many policies developed to support renewable energy, effective use of renewable energy has now been possible in today's society because a lot of studies acknowledge that renewable energy can be an alternative to fossil fuel, paving way to the possibility of shifting toward renewable in different countries.

To meet the Zero Greenhouse Gases Target by 2020, there is a need of renewable energy use comprising 10 percent in the transport sector. According to International Energy Agency regarding the national renewable energy action plans, the transport sector should be 100 percent generated by environmentally friendly resources and biofuel has substantial role for this goal.

Abu Dhabi, with vast fossil-fuel reservoir and sharing 7.4 percent of the world's oil resources, has been in the forefront in promotion of renewable energy use in developing and industrial countries. Its main project, called Masdar Initiative, has been the best example regarding renewable energy and aims to make a meaningful contribution to sustainable human development and to make Masdar City as the world's first zero-carbon, zero-waste, car-free city.

According to the WWF, a joint quick effort from each sector can make the world to fully depend on renewable energy by 2050, with no use of fossil fuel and other depleting resources.

There is still a need to produce innovative technology for fuel sustainability and to sustain renewable energy alternative for countries to keep up with goals of Paris Agreement.

Despite the presence of policies and technology supporting renewable energy, its use remains economically less attractive and more competitive than fossil fuels.

Thus, the need of increased support and boost effort is still warranted for renewable energy to support the sustainable goal the world is in need of.
