President convenes Cabinet in Boracay

A GATHERING at the paradise island of Boracay may serve as a virtual farewell for the remaining Cabinet members who will seek elective posts in the 2010 polls.

Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said the Cabinet meeting this coming Tuesday will take up reconstruction work in the wake of recent cyclones.

"Sa Martes ang Cabinet meeting, doon isasagawa sa paradise island of Boracay (The Cabinet meeting this coming Tuesday will be held in the paradise island of Boracay)," Remonde said on government-run dzRB radio.

But he said it is possible the Boracay Cabinet meeting will be the second to the last for the outgoing Cabinet officials as there is another Cabinet meeting scheduled December 1.

Still, the Cabinet may already sport a new look by then as "serious" candidates are expected to file their certificates of candidacy (COCs) on December 1 deadline.

Remonde said at the Boracay Cabinet meet, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will follow up with the pro-performance steering committee the status of her State of the Nation Address (Sona) projects.

Among the remaining Cabinet members expected to leave their posts are those running for senator under the Lakas-Kampi-CMD banner.

These include Secretaries Francisco Duque III (health) and Silvestre Bello III (Cabinet secretary), who will run alongside Binalonan (Pangasinan) Mayor Ramon Guico, radio broadcaster Reynante Langit, and Federation of Philippine Industries president Jesus Arranza.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Bayani Fernando is reportedly still eyeing the presidency, while chief presidential legal counsel Raul Gonzalez will run for Iloilo City mayor.

Presidential Management Staff head Hermogenes Esperon Jr. is seeking for a local post in Pangasinan.

Earlier this week, press undersecretary and deputy presidential spokesman Anthony Golez Jr. left his post so he can run for Bacolod City congressman.

Cabinet members who already resigned and have been replaced include Ralph Recto (socio-economic planning secretary, replaced by Augusto Santos) and Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. (replaced by Victor Domingo).

Remonde said at Tuesday's Cabinet meeting, Ricardo Saludo will report for the first time as executive director of a reconstruction commission.

The reconstruction commission oversees government-private sector efforts to rebuild from the damage caused by tropical cyclones Ondoy and Pepeng. (JMR/Sunnex)
